  • The Law

  • What is a Certificate of Destruction?

The DVLA Certificate of Destruction is a document that proves that your car has been destroyed and done so meeting all the appropriate ELV regulations. These can only be issued by an Authorised Treatment Facility, so by scrapping your car with ScrapYourCarOnline you can rest assured that you won't be hit with a nasty fine from the DVLA, or in worse can scenarios, face prosecutuion because the car was used for illegal activity without your knowing.

  • What do I do with my Certificate of Destruction?

Once you have your Certificate of Destruction you should sign the 'Holder/Owner' section and safely store it away to keep as a record.

  • Do you have the right license to scrap vehicles?

Yes! All the businesses we work with have gone through the tough process of acquiring Authorised Treatment Facility status, giving them the right permits to handle scrap vehicles and issue DVLA Certificates of Destruction. The standards of the ATF permits are rigorous and audited regularly to ensure that all regulations are met.

  • Will I need to contact the DVLA now my car has been scrapped?

As long as you have received your issued DVLA Certificate of Destruction, there is no need to contact the DVLA. In cases which you have not received your CoD within 24 hours, have been issued a Notification of Destruction (rather than a Certificate of Destruction) or your car has been salvaged and returned back to the road then you WILL need to contact the DVLA, do this by filling out the yellow section 9 of your V5C/3 (Car Registration Certificate) and post that to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BD.

  • How do I claim the road tax left on my car?

If you have been issued your Certificate of Destruction, your unused car tax will be automatically refunded to you by the DVLA within 6 weeks. If your car has been returned back to the road then you will need to fill out the yellow section 9 of your V5C/3 (Car Registration Certificate) and post that to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BD. Your refund will then automatically be refunded back to you.

  • What do the 'End of Life Vehicle Regulations' mean?

The 'End of Life Vehicle Regulations' are a set of rules that all Authorised Treatment Facilities must abide by. These regulations apply to all scrap vehicles up to 3,500kg in weight and we're introduced as a way to reduce the negative environmental impact that End of Life vechicles have on the planet.
