Why It's Important To Update The DVLA When You Scrap Your Car

If you have recently decided to wave goodbye to your four wheels recently by having it scrapped with us here at Scrap Your Car Online or any other car scrappage network, it’s imperative that you update the DVLA as soon as possible.

You might be thinking, ‘but my car is no longer on the road’?

Despite your car being well and truly out of action for the foreseeable future, if the DVLA aren’t aware of the status of your car, they will still hold you liable for the tax.

But I notify them and backdate my tax, right?

Wrong.

Contrary to what you might think if you fail to update the DVLA when you scrap your car they will only refund your tax up to the date they received a notification.

Heres How You Can Inform The DVLA

There are two different ways that you can contact the DVLA, and that is by post and online.

Informing the DVLA online is quick and easy. Simply head over to the DVLA website and ensure that have the 11 digit reference number from you V5C ( vehicles log book) handy.

Once you have completed the forum you will receive an email confirmation from the DVLA. The DVLA will then calculate a refund and issue you with a cheque for any remaining money left on your vehicle tax.

If you would prefer to get in contact with the DVLA via post here’s what you will need to do.

If you are still in possession of the vehicles logbook (V5C) you will need to contact either your car insurance company or scrap yard as they will need to fill in the “Sell, Transfer or Part-Exchange Your Vehicle” section.

Once completed this can then be sent off to the DVLA:

DVLA,
Swansea,

SA99 1BD

If you no longer have the vehicle logbook (V5C) you will need to send the following information to the DVLA:

  • Name & Address

  • Vehicle Registration Plate

  • Vehicle Model & Manufacturer

  • The Date You Scrapped It

  • Name & Address of the scrapyard.
